Songkran in Bangkok

There were a few items on our 6-month Asian backpacking itinerary that were just unnegotiable. One of them was spending Christmas and New Year's in Thailand. The other was visiting South Korea. We never even considered beginning our trip anywhere else other than Nepal--we wanted to dive right into this magical country headfirst, and we loved it.

Possibly the most unnegotiable item on our list was spending Songkran (Thai New Year) in Thailand.

Songkran is a 3-day party extravaganza of water fights and cheap beer...AND SO MUCH FUN.

Ever since we threw tomatoes at Tomatina in Spain a few years back, we vowed to also make it to Songkran one year.

After a lengthy flight from Tokyo, we were back in Bangkok ::siiiigh:: it felt great to be in a familiar place. We were reunited with our favorite street cafe, our favorite pad thai stand and our favorite fruit stand again.

Only this time, the walk to these places was like a total warzone! The first morning I ventured out to get coffee. I was worried I would get soaked already but Christian 'assured' me that it was too early for the festivities to begin...and then I walked back 30 min later soaking wet (but with coffee!).

Oh IT IS ON. Slurp, finish our coffee, change into bathing suit and "get wet" clothes, find some water guns and we were right smack dab in the middle of Thai New Year craziness on Khao San Road.

It was amazing.

I felt like a kid!

I giggled like a kid!

It was too much fun.

And just like that, Songkran became some of our most favorite days of our ENTIRE trip.

Planning on going next year? Songkran is every year from April 13th-15th for complete water fighting madness...get that waterproof camera ready ;)

My Very Magical Bridal Shower

A few weeks ago was a monumental occasion. My twin sis, mom (and fellow Harry Potter enthusiasts), and bridesmaids threw me the most magical, unique bridal shower EVER.

Yes, HARRY POTTER themed.

We had all been Harry Potter fans since we were teenagers when we were curious what all the fuss was about with these Harry Potter books—from the first book, we were hooked (as was most of the world)...nerd alert! We even spent our 25th birthday at the Harry Potter theme park in Orlando…which seemed so hilarious and quirky at the same time.

The theme was kept secret from me until moments before the shower started. For weeks, my sister and friends were telling me how much I was going to love it--what could it be?? I had NO idea. I had strict instructions to be out of the house the entire day of the bridal shower. Fortunately jet lag got me out of bed early and I started off the day with breakfast with a couple of friends then bounced from hair appointment to nail appointment to lunch with dad while my sister and her posse prepped for the party.

As we were driving back to my parents house, my dad handed me an envelope:

What?! No she didn’t! Yes she did! OMG! For all you non-Harry Potter fans, this is the official invitation to Hogwarts, School of Witchcraft & Wizardry! And ofcourse Julie made sure the address AND font was identical to Harry’s Hogwarts invitation in the first book.

I walked towards the house and saw a sign that read ‘Platform 9 ¾’ pointing towards the front door. As soon as I walked through the door, I was IN AWE! Nearly the entire house was transformed into a mix of magical candles, treats, and unbelievably creative details.

The living room was converted to The Great Hall with 2 long tables topped with centerpieces made up of Harry Potter books and candles in wax-dripped bottles. Above the tables, candles were floating in midair (well electric candles were suspended from the ceilings). It was AMAZING! Owl cut-outs and candles dotted the book cases and mini ‘dementors’ were strung to the ceiling fans as if they were flying through the air.

Every part of the room was separated into sections. The ‘Potions class’ table had bottles filled with multi-colored bottles next to my bridal shower guest book. Julie put a ‘quill’, or feathered-pen, on top of the guest book for people to write well wishes—next to it was a sign that read ‘Rachael’s Book of Spells’.

Next to that was Honeydukes Candy Shop. There were Snitch cake pops, Mandrake cupcakes and chocolate frogs (don’t worry, not real ones!) and candies of all sorts. A snitch was hovering  from the ceiling up above.

On the other side of the room was The Three Broomsticks, otherwise known as the bar. Bottled water, flavored iced tea and white wine were on hand but my favorite beverage for the night was spiked butterbeer (Harry’s favorite drink which takes kind of like butterscotch). I was AMAZED when my sister showed me the Elvish-made wine. She poured me a glass and (with the help of a few drops of food coloring in each glass), the white wine changed to blue wine. Everyone who had wine held various glasses of blue, green and red liquids. AMAZING!

In the next room, the seating room was converted into the Gryffindor common room as well as The Owlery (and place for all of my amazing gifts). The mantle was lined with all types of paper and plush owls. Julie set up a table with appetizers including homemade avocado puff pastries, sausage stuffed mushrooms and small finger foods to hold us over until dinner. Even the bathroom mirror had the words ‘Moaning Myrtle was here’ and instructions to flush to get to the Ministry of Magic (sounds weird…Harry Potter fans get it!).

As soon as everyone arrived and a few drinks were poured, my twin sis started walking around with THE SORTING HAT! Hahaha. Each person had to choose a paper from the hat to see which house they were a part of—Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin. I was designated an automatic Gryffindor :). We all sat for dinner under the floating candles according to our assignment from The Sorting Hat. The food was a feast for the eyes—greek salad, tri-tip, ravioli cream sauce with veggies.

Julie had moved the couches outside so we could play games and open gifts in the open air. I felt so much joy and was overwhelmed with an obscene amount of gifts and love. And just after gifts were opened, she busted out the ping pong table and proposed we get started with Quidditch beer pong!

I could go on and on and on about how magical this bridal shower was and still cannot fully describe every detail. Not just the Harry Potter details, but the incredible feeling of love from the 30 girls and moms that joined to celebrate me being a bride. I am incredibly lucky to have had such a unique celebration and my twin sis nailed the theme. I’m so excited that she is also the driving force behind our wedding decorations/planning and if the wedding is anything as magical as the bridal shower, then this wedding will look extra incredible.

To the best twinnie ever...THANKS for making my wizarding dreams come true!

All Hallows' Eve!

Europe doesn't celebrate Halloween like us crazy Americans but there are plenty of pumpkins and autumn-esque eye candy around town. I can't wait to show Christian how a real American Halloween is celebrated!

Tonight we'll be celebrating Halloween with Jana and a bunch of my other fave Americans around town! Hope you all have a festive Halloween!

My Favorite Place

Yesterday, Christian and I were listing all of the places we want to go to one day. As we sat there, I also day-dreamed about where would I return to? If I had to pick one destination to go back to, what would it be?

Amsterdam is always my favorite city (both before and after I moved here!). And I definitely love mornings when I wake up with Christian curled next to me and Jack the cat curled on the other side.

Mljet, Croatia, is without a doubt the most magical, pristine place I’ve ever been.

The beaches of Southern California are home and held countless memories of beach days, bonfires, sunsets and, most recently, where Christian proposed.

But no matter where I travel to…my mind always reverts back to one spot…a quiet stretch of coastline between La Paz and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. My parents vacationed here since before I was born and by the time my sis and I were 4 years old, we played in the water here for years and years. It’s the site of my dad, uncle and brothers annual fishing trips, where my dad celebrated his 50th birthday, where my brother proposed to his wife, where several friends and I, over a matter of years, escaped to this quiet Mexican village for tanning, swimming and endless pina coladas and where I would wake up in the morning and see my dad looking out over the ocean enjoying the sunrise with a cup of coffee in hand every single morning.

The calm water changes from turquoise to deep blue, the people are extremely friendly, the local spot in town has the best enchiladas on the planet and it’s in this place that Christian and I will get married next year surrounded by our family and friends :)!

Oooooh Buena Vista and Los Barriles, Mexico, you steal my heart!

If you had to return back to ONE DESTINATION again, where would you go?

Up to my crazy ways...Cali-Oregonian Roadtrip!

Here's one thing you don't know about me: I kinda like doing crazy things...ok really like it! Like the time I went bungee-jumping in Costa Rica, or graduated college then decided to go sky-diving the next morning (then moved to Amsterdam a week later), or partied my butt off in Berlin with my best friends last summer. Whatever it is...I'm always up for an adventure! Sometimes I can convince Christian to be crazy with me (he's well aware of my crazy antics).

My most recent crazy idea originated a few weeks ago--I decided to fly out to California for a long weekend only from Amsterdam to surprise my best friends. These friends of mine were off on a roadtrip to Oregon and I just couldn't miss it. So I bought a ticket! Before I knew it, I was in Cali and with my friends and family. The crazy part was I arrived on a Saturday, spent Sunday in Southern California, spent Monday on the road up north (that's a whopping 15 hours, people!), spent Tuesday floating down a beautiful Oregonian river wearing floppy hats, spent Tuesday night out all night in Portland and spent Wednesday on a plane back to Amsterdam in time to make it to work on Thursday morning. Crazy, right?

Well here's to being crazy...because it's better to regret the things you have done than the things you haven't done. And you sure can't put a price on friendship...even if it IS only for a long weekend :)...even if that long weekend just to happens to be half-way across the world.

Check out a few pics from our quicky road-trip to Oregon! I snapped these pics with a Go Pro camera...pretty neat, huh?!

And be sure to stop by Jay's blog From Here to There to check out my 'Expatriated' guest post! Thanks for having me, Jay!

Surprise…I’m in Cali! But only for 30 hours…

Hooray! I'm in my beloved California :). I decided to fly out, surprise my best friends and join them on a two-day road-trip up to Oregon. It's things like this that just cannot be missed, precious moments on the road that will be filled with laughs, beautiful scenery and the best type of company--you just can't put a price on this! So I bought a ticket a few weeks back (I blame YOU Smitty for planting this idea in my head!) and decided to just go for it. I landed in Orange County on Saturday night in time to swoop on my friends to surprise them, spent Sunday morning at breakfast with my dad, fitting my wedding dress with my twin sis, BBQing with all of my brothers and sisters then having dinner with my parents. Monday morning, Smithers, Julia, Traci and I hit the open road headed north! Yesterday we spent the entire day in and around Portland with Julia's dad. And now, well I'm already on a plane headed back to Amsterdam because I've got work in the morning :(. Oy vey...

These last few days have been the longest ever...but I would re-do it all over again and again.  My friends and I thrive on doing crazy things...and this is one of the craziest, best I've done!

Around this time last year though, I was also in Cali for my twin sister's bachelorette party in Vegas and her wedding! In and around all of the wedding stuff, we hit Mutt Lynch's in Newport Beach for happy hour and my older sis and I showed Christian the annual Orange County Fair...he was impressed with how many deep-fried things there were...and slightly disgusted too ;). Then he saw the RV demolition derby and forgot about the deep-fried things...oh boys...
